Summer Colour Palette

In seasonal colour analysis, the summer palette is the family of colours that are cool, soft and light. Think of a British summer under a hazy sky rather than a Mediterranean one: dusty rose, powder blue, lavender, soft grey. Every colour has blue in its base and a gentle, muted quality, as if seen through a fine mist. Nothing in the palette is hot, sharp or heavy.

It is one of the four seasonal palettes — spring, summer, autumn and winter — that colour analysis uses to group colours by undertone, depth and clarity. Summer and winter are the two cool palettes; summer is the softer and lighter of the pair. Some colour analysts divide summer further into sub-types such as light or soft summer; Colourcat works with the four seasons, so everything on this page refers to the summer palette as a whole.

The palette is built on cool, softened colour. Its pinks are its calling card — rose, dusty rose and powder pink, deepening to raspberry and mauve. Blues run from powder blue and sky blue through periwinkle to a soft denim blue, and its purples are gentle: lavender, lilac and heather. Greens are cool and muted — sage, mint and a blue-toned sea green — and its reds are cool and soft, closer to raspberry or watermelon than to tomato.

Summer neutrals are soft rather than stark: light and mid greys, mushroom and rose-beige, a soft off-white instead of brilliant white, and navy as the palette's darkest neutral in place of black. Black and orange are the two colours the palette most obviously does without — black is too harsh against soft colouring, orange too warm.

Summer colouring is usually cool and soft. Skin has a pink, rosy or neutral-cool undertone and tends to look better in silver jewellery than gold. Hair is frequently ash-toned — ash blonde, light to medium ash brown, or the shade often unfairly called mousy — and eyes are soft rather than piercing: grey-blue, soft blue, grey-green or a gentle hazel.

The overall effect is low to medium contrast with a softness to it. Muted, cool colours sit in harmony with that; very bright or very dark colours tend to overpower it, and warm colours can make the skin look sallow. None of these are rules — many people are a blend of qualities, and the best test is still holding a colour up to your face in daylight and seeing whether it softens your features or fights them.

Start with the colours nearest your face. A powder-blue shirt, a dusty-rose knit, a lavender T-shirt or a soft navy blazer flatters on its own; keep the rest simple. The palette's neutrals carry most outfits — grey trousers, a rose-beige coat, an off-white tee, soft mid-blue denim — and they make even the gentlest colours look deliberate.

Tonal dressing is summer's great strength: shades of one colour worn together, such as light grey with slate, rose with raspberry, or sky blue with denim, look effortless because the whole palette shares the same soft, cool quality. For contrast, try rose with grey, lavender with navy, sage with off-white, or powder blue with mushroom. Where you would reach for black, try navy, slate or a deep grey-blue instead — they give the same anchoring depth without the hardness.

For a whole wardrobe, build on a base of grey, navy, mushroom and off-white, add your favourite summer colours in tops, knitwear and scarves, and let one softer statement piece — a raspberry coat, a periwinkle jacket — do the talking. Silver-toned hardware and jewellery finish the look.
